BHK Marks 50 Years of Transformative Impact: Empowering Thousands of Families, Nurturing Futures

Houghton, MI – December 29, 2023– Baraga-Houghton-Keweenaw Child Development Board, Inc. (BHK) proudly announces its upcoming 50th anniversary in 2024, commemorating five decades of unwavering dedication to empowering families and nurturing futures.

Established in 1974, BHK has evolved into a dynamic and multifaceted human service organization, positively influencing the lives of tens of thousands of children and families across Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw Counties. From humble beginnings of a half-day summer preschool program to current full day, full year programs, BHK has consistently pioneered collaborative and outcome-based initiatives that have withstood the test of time.

With five decades of service under its belt, BHK proudly highlights a tapestry of success stories — a testament to the transformative impact of its multi-generational programs. Anchored by the acclaimed Head Start program, BHK has expanded its reach to encompass a spectrum of services at over fifteen locations. These included pregnancy support for over 1,000 expectant mothers, educational and socialization groups benefiting more than 50,000 parents and grandparents, after-school/summer programming for 7,500 K-8th grade students, and assistance to over 1,500 young parents in obtaining their diploma or GED.

Beyond individual triumphs, BHK stands as a pillar in the communities it serves. Active engagement in early childhood system building, volunteer service projects, and community events underline the organization's commitment to fostering a healthy community where children and families grow and thrive. Through early education, health, nutrition, and family services, BHK has played a pivotal role in laying a robust foundation for future generations.

Cheryl Mills, BHK Executive Director, emphasized the organization's adaptability, stating, “Over the years, BHK has tailored its comprehensive services to meet the evolving needs of the families, focusing on their overall wellbeing and recognizing its profound impact on child outcomes.”
